Choosing the right respirator mask
Disposable respirators are classified by their filtration efficiency. P1 masks filter mechanically generated dusts and are suited to nuisance dusts in low-hazard environments. P2 masks (equivalent to N95) filter finer particles including silica dust, concrete dust, mould and most construction airborne hazards — P2 is the minimum recommended standard for silica-generating tasks such as cutting, grinding or drilling concrete, masonry and engineered stone. P3 masks offer the highest filtration and are used in higher-hazard environments. Look for masks certified to AS/NZS 1716 — the Australian and New Zealand standard for respiratory protective devices. Valved versions reduce heat and moisture build-up during extended wear.
