Notched vs flat tilers trowels
A notched trowel is used to apply tile adhesive in ridges, which collapse when the tile is pressed into place — creating maximum coverage and a strong bond. Notch size and shape (square, V or U) determines the adhesive bed thickness and is selected to match the tile size and adhesive type. A flat trowel is used to spread a base coat of adhesive before notching, or for back-buttering individual tiles.
