How safety lockout tags are used
A lockout/tagout procedure requires that energy sources (electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic or mechanical) are isolated and locked out before maintenance or repair work begins. A safety tag is attached to the isolator or lockout device to identify who has locked out the equipment, when the isolation was applied, and the reason for isolation. This prevents accidental re-energisation and protects workers from unexpected equipment start-up — one of the leading causes of serious workplace injuries in Australia. Safety tags should be used in conjunction with physical lockout devices and comply with relevant WHS legislation and AS/NZS 4024 machinery safety standards.
