Joint knives vs taping knives
A joint knife (typically 75–150mm wide) is used for applying compound to screws and smaller areas, and for initial joint filling. A taping knife (typically 200–300mm wide) is used for embedding paper or fibreglass tape into the wet compound over joints, and for applying and feathering wider coats. Both are available in carbon steel and stainless steel — stainless blades resist rust and are easier to keep clean between coats.
