Choosing the right notched trowel
Notch size and profile determine the thickness of the adhesive bed and the coverage achieved. Square notches and V-notches are the most common profiles — square notches (U-shaped) are the industry standard for most tile and adhesive combinations, while V-notches are used for smaller tiles and thinner adhesive beds. Notch size (depth and spacing) must be matched to the tile size and the adhesive manufacturer's recommendation — larger tiles require deeper notches to ensure sufficient adhesive coverage. Key specs: notch depth (mm), notch profile (square or V), blade material (stainless steel for corrosion resistance) and handle type. Always back-butter large format tiles in addition to notch trowelling the substrate to ensure full coverage.
