Types of carpenters squares
A framing square (large L-square) is used for checking the squareness of frames, marking out rafters and laying out stair stringers — both arms are graduated in millimetres for measuring as well as squaring. A combination square includes a sliding rule, 45° mitre face and level vial, making it a versatile tool for marking, squaring, and checking level in one. A try square has a fixed 90° blade used for marking and checking square on smaller timber sections and joints.
